Workers exposed to cold or freezing temperatures for extended periods of time may experience serious health problems such as frostbite, hypothermia and trench foot. In extreme cases exposure can lead to death. Learn the signs and symptoms of cold-induced illnesses and injuries and what to do to help workers. Warning signs include clumsy movements, confused behavior, fatigue, slurred speech, and uncontrolled shivering. Take precautions such as encouraging workers to wear proper clothing for cold, wet and windy conditions, including layers that can be adjusted to changing weather conditions. Encourage workers to take frequent short breaks in a warm, dry shelter to allow the body to warm up. Breaks are a good time to encourage workers to consume warm beverages or a heated snack. Workers should try to avoid caffeine or alcohol. Encourage workers to use the buddy system and work in pairs so that warning signs can be recognized and treated promptly. Individuals who take medications, are in poor physical condition, or suffer from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension or cardiovascular disease should be especially cautious when working in extreme weather conditions.
