Did you know...?
March is National Nutrition Month. Good nutrition is an important step in preventing many chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain cancers. According to the National Cancer Institute, 80 percent of cancers are due to factors that have been identified and can potentially be controlled, and of these, as much as 35 to 50 percent are due to the foods we consume. We may be eating plenty of food, but not eating the right kinds of food products that give our body the nutrients we need to stay healthy. Choosing fiber-rich legumes, grains, vegetables, and fruits may help prevent many types of cancer. For example, diets rich in the phytochemical lycopene may reduce the risk of prostate cancer, fiber-rich diets have been shown to reduce the risk of colon cancer, and choosing a diet low in fat has been proven to reduce the risk for breast and other types of cancer. The best way to give your body the balanced nutrition it needs is by eating a variety of nutrient-packed foods every day. A healthy eating plan is one that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products; includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts; and is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.
