Did you know...?
One of the fastest-growing trends among US companies is drug testing. According to the American Management Association, nearly 100 percent of Fortune 500 companies conduct pre-employment and random drug tests on employees. The pros of Pre-Employment Drug Testing include fewer severance issues, performance issues, and EAP issues related to substance abuse. Other benefits of pre-employment, for-cause, post-incident, and random drug testing programs are decreased turnover rate, increased productivity, reduced workers’ compensation claims, and creating a positive work environment. For-Cause Testing has the highest rate of positives and often requires manager and supervisor “buy-in” training to avoid legal and personnel problems. Post-Incident Testing should be done in the event of any accident or near-accident which caused, or could have caused, a fatality, serious injury, or significant property damage. Random, Unannounced Testing is the most effective form of employee drug testing. It has the greatest deterrent impact because employees know they may be caught… Random testing is inherently fair and objective. There is no chance of favoritism, subjectivity, or manipulation of the process. Everyone in the company has an equal chance of being selected. Random drug testing has been shown to reduce the incidence of substance use in the workplace.
The U.S. Department of Labor has reported that nearly nine percent of current employees and 12% of job applicants test positive for illegal drug use. Given these numbers, and the fact that drug abuse is estimated to cost business $100 billion per year in lost profits; it is no wonder that many businesses are considering drug testing.
