TIP OF THE WEEK

                                                                    April 28, 2010

Did you know...?

April 28th is Workers Memorial Day

Workers Memorial Day was first observed in 1989.  April 28 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 1970.  While there have been improvements since then, disasters like the gas explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine earlier this month force us to recognize that there’s much more to do.  Each year, thousands of workers are killed and millions more are injured or diseased because of their jobs.  Injuries and deaths can be prevented when safety is a higher priority than profits.

The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations will hold a Workers Memorial Day Ceremony today to honor workers who lost their lives in the workplace in 2009.  The ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the south lawn of the Capitol at 201 W. Capitol Ave. in Jefferson City.  The event is free and open to the public.  The department said that in 2009, more than 109,000 Missouri workers were injured and 116 lost their lives in the workplace.  Family members of the deceased workers will receive special recognition at the ceremony.  For more information about the ceremony, or to view an online memorial honoring workers who lost their lives in 2009, go to http://www.labor.mo.gov/rememberworkers/.

In Kansas, the Wichita/Hutchinson Labor Federation will host the annual Worker’s Memorial Day Dinner to call on the federal government and the Kansas Legislature to enact critical laws to change the nation’s health and safety standards.  The Workers’ Memorial Day Event will take place at the Machinist Hall, 3830 S. Meridian, Wichita, KS.  The event will include a free dinner and speakers from government and a representative from OSHA.  It is open to union workers, families and community members.

Workers Memorial Day is a time to remember those who have suffered and died on the job and to renew the fight for safe workplaces.
