Youth Worker Fatality, Injury Rates Decline

Younger workers (defined as those aged 15--24 years) represent 14% of the U.S. labor force and face high risk for injury while on the job.

The rates of fatal and nonfatal injuries for young workers declined in the 10-year-period ending in 2007, according to a study released in April by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The fatality rate for young workers was 3.6 deaths per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers, lower than the 4.4 deaths per 100,000 FTE for those 25 and older, and the youth rate decreased an estimated 14% during the time period studied.

There were 7.9 million nonfatal injuries to younger workers treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments, which translated to a rate of 5 such injuries per 100 FTE, which was about twice the rate of workers over 25. The rate of injury declined 19% over the 10 years.

The greatest number of fatal injuries among young workers occurred in service industries (32%), construction (28%), wholesale and retail trade (10%), and agriculture (10%) industry sectors.  Younger workers experienced the highest rates of fatal injury in mining (36.5 per 100,000 FTE), agriculture (21.3), and construction (10.9).

The center's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) analyzed data from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries and the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System occupational supplement for the period 1998-2007 to create its report.
